Four Counties, One Price Table

The Capital Region is a patchwork of sewer and septic. The city cores of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy are sewered, but step a few miles out and most homes rely on their own tank and drain field. Albany County alone estimated about 7,500 systems across Colonie, Bethlehem, Guilderland, and New Scotland. Brunswick, Schodack, Duanesburg, and western Glenville are mostly unsewered.

Soils vary just as much. Glacial Lake Albany left slow-draining silt and clay under the valley floor, while the Pine Bush and the sand plains near Wilton drain fast. The Great Flats Aquifer under Schenectady, Rotterdam, Glenville, and Niskayuna supplies drinking water to more than 150,000 people, which is why well-maintained septic systems matter there.

Wherever you are, the same typical price ranges apply. Local codes differ: Malta requires pumping at least every three years, Halfmoon asks for yearly inspection in MS4 areas, and several towns require connection when a sewer line reaches your lot.

Albany County

The county seat and its suburbs. Pine Bush sands on the west side, Hudson valley clay near the river, and hilltowns to the southwest. County health department permits new and repaired systems.

Schenectady County

The Mohawk valley towns north and south of the river, most of them over the Great Flats Aquifer. The county environmental health unit issues construction permits for new systems.

Rensselaer County

Troy and the towns climbing east onto the Rensselaer Plateau. Outside the city and a few districts, most homes are on individual septic systems with county health department oversight.

Saratoga County

The fastest-growing corner of the region, from Northway suburbs to Saratoga Lake and the sand plains near Wilton. Saratoga County Sewer District accepts septage from haulers.
